The Crazy Chicken

By Ted Kane

(Editor’s note – Crazy Chicken is a fast food chain in Southern California rb)

'El Pollo Loco,' she said as we
pulled into the parking lot of the
mini-mall, 'what the hell is this,
El Pollo Loco!' 'I thought you liked
El Pollo Loco,' I blandly explained.

'I do,' she allowed, 'but you told me
we were going to a Mexican restaurant!'
'Well, El Pollo Loco isn't English,
you know, it's Spanish. It means
The Crazy Chicken.' She didn't reply to
that, just glared at me some more.

We went in, and an amiable brown
skinned man took our order. 'See,'
I beamed, 'doesn't our server look Mexican?'
She didn't dignify that with an answer,
unless you count another glare.

The man came back with our meal on a
red plastic tray. 'Here you go, senor,'
he said. 'My name is Carlos. I am from
Nicaragua.' I turned white, then red.
It figures, she was right all along.
