Back to the Garden

by Rick Brown

Just before the Fourth of July I stopped in to take a look at how things were going for Faith Mission’s very first urban garden. And while some areas are struggling it looks like much of it will result in a fine harvest come fall. Gardening is a process. So if anyone expected a huge success without any learning curve…well that’s simply naïve. Yvonne and I have been raising a garden for about 30 years now and there is always more wisdom to acquire, not to mention how fickle the weather can be. So far this has been a cool summer in Central Ohio and that can be a mixed blessing. But the squash, herbs, and tomatoes looked pretty good. And they can go a long way in feeding people.

According to Faith Mission Development Officer Terri Rowe, just having the garden itself has focused a lot of attention on F.M.’s goals and contributions to our community. Some of Faith on 8th’s residents have been happy to learn gardening skills along the way. Yet, as I stated in the initial story in Naked Sunfish’s previous issue, even if Faith Mission’s Urban Garden is a smashing success, donations both monetary and produce itself, is always needed and appreciated. If you would like to donate fresh produce for Faith Mission’s kitchen please contact Tony Williams at 614.224.6617. Those willing to volunteer can go to www.faithmissionofohio.org for more information.
