I have to make amends after last month’s restaurant review. I will go in a direction exactly opposite from the review of a huge steaming mound of meat. The threats on my life have nothing to do with the change. I just want to get in line with my audience. The primary reason for this month’s review is that I have been going to the restaurant I will review more and more often and I really like it. The Olive Tree Mediterranean Cafe in Hilliard, OH hosts a variety of fresh and authentic Mediterranean menu items, some are unique to the Columbus area. I have been here too many times to count and have tried the majority of their entries. This is a nice neighborhood source of Mediterranean food at a reasonable price that is in a neat clean setting. I have had the Baba Ganouj, the Eggplant Salad, the Matbucha and the Tzatziki, and all were top notch. The Matbucha , tomatoes and roasted bell pepers seasoned with garlic and chili pepper, stood out with a little heat and a nice earthy blend of spice and garlic. My wife really likes the Machmusa (eggplant slow-cooked with tomatoes and onion). They have a falafel salad that is basically a Greek salad with three falafels. Their falafels are crispy on the outside and warm and creamy on the inside. They are some of the best I have had. The Chicken Shawarma over hummus is one of my favorites. It is warm spicy and the chicken is perfectly grilled. They make their Baba Ganouj and the Hummis from scratch and it is creamy and delicious. I recently tried their Spanikopita (Spinach Pie) and loved it. It has flakey outer dough with creamy spinach filling. Their Pita sandwiches are made fresh, and other selections include the ever-popular gyro, falafel, kafta kabobs and chicken gyro. The restaurant offers a wide variety of vegetarian menu items including the mujadara (a blend of lentils and rice topped with grilled tomatoes and onions) or the vegetarian platter (grapes leaves, falafel, hummus and tabouli). The Baklava and the Nut and Chocolate Roll are both a great end to your meal. Come visit The Olive Tree Mediterranean Café and give it a try. I don’t think you will be disappointed.
