Sher-E-Punjab

I
understand Sher-E-Punjab closed and then quickly reopened. There
are still several foodie sites that list it as closed. It is
open as of last week. My first visit here was less than wonderful
but it looked like it could have some potential, so I tried
it two more times to see before I said stay away. I’m
glad I did because any place can have a bad day. I think I went
there on one of those days where they should have pulled the
front door shut and told everyone to go back to bed. The second
two times I went it was a very enjoyable experience. Once I
went alone just to make sure the curse had been lifted and once
with a friend that has accompanied me on several restaurant
expeditions. He has a different sense about food than I do and
he sees things I sometime don’t. He is also a vegetarian
and if he can eat at a restaurant than I feel comfortable saying
is safe for vegetarians. Sher-E-Punjab offers a buffet at lunch
that gives you a chance to try several dishes before you commit
to something you haven’t tried before.
So
the Sher-E-Punjab has a wide variety of dishes and while there
are some I like better than others nothing has been below standard
since the first unfortunate visit. The Tandori Chicken is the
dish I liked least, as both times it was a bit dry. But even
the Tandori Chicken was acceptable. I like naan with my meal
but every time I have been there it comes out about half way
through the meal. I also really like the Saag Paneer. It was
creamy, savory with a hint of curry. Unlike some Saag Paneer
the spices were not overwhelming and the taste of the spinach
came through nicely. Both the Aloo Gobhi and the Aloo Mutter
were more authoritatively spiced and the balance was nice between
the more bland potatoes and the curry spice. Finally, they offer
three varieties of curried goat. I like goat and well-prepared
goat in a good curry is one of my favorites. I have tried one
of the curries, Roganjosh. It was quite good, being complex,
spicy and has an authority without kicking you in the mouth.
It went very well with the goat that was tender and moist. Everything
was well prepared and very good. I tried the Vindaloo and the
Madras Curry. Both of these curries have more heat and would
go well with goat. If you like curries and Indian food I would
give Sher-E- Punjab a try. It is vegetarian friendly and while
a bit inconsistent it has been a great place to eat two out
of three times.
