Are We There Yet?
By Linda Mizen Wickline
Where are Dave and I going for our next trip? Once we decide our ultimate destination, I start reviewing Internet mapping programs for the best route to take, trying to avoid city traffic and mountain ranges, staying on state or federal routes. Once the route is finalized, I make a list of 3 possible campgrounds starting at 180 miles out from our current location to rest for the night(s). If it is just an overnight, I will also have ready the next campground to choose from - 180 miles further from the first campground, locking in both campgrounds with reservations.

A big factor in determining our route is to find interesting places to visit. National parks are great, but we try to visit the small lesser-known places that often provide the WOW factor as well. For example, while we were visiting Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor, Maine, the campground we stayed at provided a brochure for Moxie Falls, the highest waterfall of Maine. While there a local recommended we go to Houston Brook Falls. What a hidden treasure!

Unlike most RVers, we do not plan our trip from A to Z. We have an ultimate location we want to see, but we take each leg slowly, savoring all there is to see and do before moving on. Within 4 days of moving again, I get my next list of campgrounds ready and call for reservations. Once a campground is locked in, I build a list of places to see. Sounds like a lot of work, but it’s really fun to plan and route each leg of the trip. The Internet provides so much information and we utilize the brochures the campgrounds have on hand.
