Packed Away
I don't remember wrapping it in newsprint
tossing it into a box--
sealed with double strength tape.
I don't remember tossing it carelessly
into an open lidded box --
jumbled items, headed to the thrift.
I don't think I left it on the bus,
forgetting it on a waiting room chair--
remembered only later.
It wasn't like any of that.
I think it did slip away
falling like sand--
passed through a red plastic sieve.
I think it could have been like water
flowing over rocks--
noticed only after it was gone.
I think it could have been a penny here
a nickel there--
spending until it was all gone.
I stand, looking around
room by room--
confused.
It is no longer here. |
