Family Values

Scene: The Columbus Commons … a green space/park in the center of downtown Columbus, Ohio. It is Sunday, early evening, of Labor Day weekend. Shadowbox Live troupe members are working to set the stage for an outdoor performance of their Woodstock themed Back to the Garden musical that night. A lawn chair carrying crowd slowly gathers in front of the stage. There is an air of anticipatory excitement from both the troupe and growing audience. Rick is walking casually … center stage … between the play within a play’s crowd and the actual audience. Singer/dancer/actor Edelyn stands close by, relaxing before the show. They see each other and wave enthusiastically. They hug.

Edelyn - RICK! How are you?

Rick – I’m good … so great to see you again!

Edelyn – Likewise. Yvonne’s here?

Rick – Of Course … up close to the stage holding us a spot.

Edelyn – Please give her my best!

Rick – Will do. Hey! A quick question. I’m actually a little surprised you guys are doing this show for free with no restrictions.

Edelyn – I’m not sure what you mean.

Rick – Well … this is a show about Woodstock. Drug use … cursing … more drug use …. Yadda, yadda, yadda. Even the “Fish (FUCK) Cheer’ is in there!

Edelyn – We’re doing the FAMILY friendly version of Back to the Garden.

Rick ponders this for a moment.

Rick – Hmmm.

Edelyn cocks her head and smiles broadly at Rick.

Rick (severely sarcastically) – I HATE the FUCKING FAMILY friendly version!

Edelyn (smirking sweetly and with playful mockery) – I HATE the FUCKING FAMILY FRIENDLY VERSION TOO!!!
