The
Non-Fiction Theater of the Truly Mundane proudly presents:
Philly Phone Call
by Rick Brown
Scene: Room 1201, Latham
Hotel, Philadelphia, Pa. http://www.lathamhotel.com/ a classic
European boutique style hotel. The room is modest yet tastefully
decorated with a king sized bed, floor lamps, chest of drawers,
heavy drapes and high backed Victorian reading chairs. Rick is
sitting on the bed, lazily changing channels on the TV which sits…somewhat
ill fittingly…in the corner by the bathroom door. Dressed
for a late breakfast, he is waiting for Yvonne who is freshening
up in the bathroom. The door is closed. They are in town for her
nephew’s wedding. Many friends and relatives have rooms
in the same hotel…in Rick’s mind…fortunately
located on different floors. Rick appears somewhat bored.
The phone rings.
Rick saunters over
to the nightstand by the bed and gingerly picks up the receiver.
Rick (in a confident
tone) – “State Mental Institute!”
Mother in Law (seemingly
confused…perhaps a bit intimidated) -“Uh…uh…um…I
was calling 1201?”
Rick – “This
is 1201.”
Mother in Law –
“Uh…uh…is Yvonne or Rick there?”
Rick – “This
is Rick.”
Mother in Law –
“Uh…this doesn’t sound like Rick.”
Rick – “Very
well then. This is BOB!!!”
Mother in Law (excitedly
and with a sense of deep relief) – “Now I KNOW this
is RICK!!!”
