Five Million Easy Pieces of the Night Music
(with apologies to everyone)

By now everyone is familiar with the fall from grace of James Frey, the
tough-guy recovering drug addict from Granville, OH. His elaborate
story of crime and redemption A Million Little Pieces was
revealed to be a near complete falsehood, shortly after being trumpeted
by Oprah Winfrey as a great book. Oprah, for her part, chose to stand
by the book, but it seems significant that her next selection is a book
of seemingly impeccable reputation, Elie Wiesel's holocaust
memoir Night. Quite a juxtaposition, IMO.

So, what happens when Elie Wiesel goes on the Oprah show and James Frey
crashes the party? I think it looks like this:

Oprah: My honorable guest tonight is Nobel Prize winner Elie Wiesel,
who is the author of this month's book club selection Night. We are so
proud to have you on our show today words cannot describe it.

(applause)

Wiesel: Thank you, Oprah. I love your program. I only wish Dr. Phil
could be here with us.

(applause)

Oprah: Now, your book is a memoir, a true account of your suffering at
the hands of the Nazis.

Wiesel: That's right, Oprah. Every word is true, exactly the way that
I lived it.

(disruption from the crowd, crowd gasps as James Frey grabs the
audience mic)

Frey: Hey, I read your book, man, and I got a question to ask you.

Oprah: (startled, but regains her composure) James Frey, ladies and
gentlemen, author of A Million Little Pieces

(nervous applause)

Frey: Yeah, what I want to know, why did you take that abuse from
those guys? Man I woulda beaten those Nazi soldier to death with my bare hands, I'da taken 'em two, three at at time....

(security comes and takes Frey away; he submits meekly)
